You might be thinking, “What’s the big deal? I’m not having sex...What does HIV/AIDS have to do with me?” Everything! Information about HIV/AIDS isn’t just for people who are having sex. Even if you’re not sexually active now, the time will come when you will be. Learning about HIV/AIDS now will help prepare you for the time when you do start having sex.

Also, you might be hearing talk around you about HIV/AIDS, and you might even know someone who has HIV/AIDS. But do you know what information is true and what is false?

In Fo’ Life is a programme geared towards educating teenagers and young adults about HIV/AIDS. The aim of In Fo’ Life is to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS, as well as limit stigmatisation and discrimination against HIV/AIDS positive persons.

The programme began earlier this year in Barbados with a pilot project at the Lodge School, including skits, dance routines, and talks from persons living with HIV/AIDS. Feedback sessions before and after the presentation proved overwhelmingly positive in terms of students’ knowledge and changes in attitudes towards HIV/AIDS.

In Fo’ Life is now set to expand into other secondary schools, beginning with Garrison Secondary School, Springer Memorial School and Princess Margaret School. In addition to the various presentations, facts about HIV/AIDS, as well as the A & B of HIV/AIDS safety—which encourage young people to Abstain, and Be faithful —will be disseminated via a campaign in the schools that will include posters, leaflets and bookmarks.

“Scotiabank is pleased and excited to be part of In Fo’ Life, which is the latest in a number of initiatives in the fight against HIV/AIDS that we have contributed to,” said Stephen Cozier, Managing Director of Scotiabank. “And we are committed to continuing the fight against HIV/AIDS, especially where our future leaders and decision makers is concerned.” …read more
